Our Mission
Interfaith Worker Justice Southern Maine is a partnership of faith and labor communities, joined together to respond to issues of worker and social justice and their relevance to society as a whole.
Through education, advocacy and compassionate motivation based on the moral teachings of our respective faiths, we seek to promote understanding within our faith communities of labor and social issues.
Who are we?
We are religious leaders and lay activists committed to promoting issues of justice in the workplace.
Although we primarily advocate from the worker’s perspective, we hold that every person in every workplace deserves to be treated in a just manner.
What are we doing?
IWJ-Southern Maine is reaching out to the business community in Southern Maine to explore the issue of wage theft in our communities and its impact on businesses and workers. Â While unscrupulous businesses engage in wage theft to maximize profits, sometimes honorable employers simply are not aware of the laws governing employee rights. Â Other times economic hardships leave employers hard choices of laying off valued employees or resorting to means outside of the law to keep them working and their businesses operating.
We believe wage theft is detrimental for workers and businesses. It is in everyone’s best interest that workers are paid fairly and legally.
